Pus on the tonsils, also known as tonsillar pus or purulent tonsillitis, refers to the presence of whitish or yellowish discharge on the surface of the tonsils. This condition is defined as the accumulation of pus, a thick fluid containing dead cells, bacteria, and immune cells, on the tonsils, which are lymphoid tissues located at the back of the throat. The primary cause of pus on the tonsils is bacterial infection, particularly streptococcal bacteria, leading to acute bacterial tonsillitis or strep throat.
